Today, visitors find captivating and innovative programs mining the iconic holdings and offering new stories that illustrate the breadth and quality of the museum’s collection.There are many opportunities for volunteers to contribute to the museum. Some volunteers greet and support the visitor experience during programs like Second Saturdays for Families and Community Days. In 1841, Hartford native Daniel Wadsworth (1771‒1848) announced plans to open a public art gallery. With help from friends and donors, he expanded his vision and founded an athenaeum, a cultural center dedicated to art, literature, and history.
