After the release of the album, Trial by Fire, Journey planned to tour before Perry suffered an injury in a hiking accident; he refused to undergo surgery, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the group. Perry's departure was officially announced in May 1998. He was replaced immediately by Steve Augeri, formerly of Tall Stories.
