The Benelli being better balanced and much "nicer", whilst the 590 is built as tough as any gun I've ever seen. if clubbing an elephant to death is a consideration potentially, 590.

I picked a new Benelli SuperNova a nd really like it; the only negatives on the Nova are less capacity and no lug for the bayonet. I do like the Nova having an AR style stock as I like having a PG on my stock. I would like to add a light to one of these. My question is which SG the 590 or SuperNova considered better in a pure HD role.The built in swivel mounts are a nice feature. Some other models don't offer them and it costs you more to put on. I have shot my brother-in-laws 870 express before and it is comparible to the Nova in recoil using the 2 3/4 inch shells. I happen to like the looks of the Nova and I love the synthetic material.The Mossberg 500 has its safety on the rear top of the receiver. This is a great place for the safety when using a standard shotgun stock. It is easy to access with your thumb and it makes it easy to see the condition of the shotgun. However, if you're going to use a pistol grip, it is downright awkward to use.The quality and specs of these 2 guns is beyond the Mossberg 500 and a used Remington 870. The barrel on the Mossberg is parkerized while the receiver on the Supernova is encased inside polymer to guard against rust. Both never jam. Benelli feels smoother cycling out of the box. Both are reliable and as far as finish goes you can clean the Mossberg if it starts to rust. I use both for upland and I think the Benelli feels slightly lighter or at least less front heavy. From what I've read, the Mossberg 835 uses a barrel that has the diameter of a 10-gauge . . . and that's why the Mossberg 835 is really the only gun that will have a good pattern with a 3.5" shell. Any gun with a normal 12-gauge barrel is basically not meant to shoot the amount of shot and the amount of pressure that a 3.5" shell offers.

Posted July 30, 2010. The only advantage of the Super Nova is the interchangable butt stock. But, I don't believe Benelli makes one that is 1" shorter, which is the only one worth changing to. I also am not a fan of pistol grip shotguns.
