Maytag dryer stopped working mid cycle

My Maytag washer, purchased in 1990 and model # A8340, stopped working, apparently mid-cycle. I went to check on the load and it had just stopped, full of water. I removed the wet laundry, and it started to refill due to drop in the water level. When I rotate the dial, however, it does absolutely nothing - no sound, no hum, nothing.
