Underneath the rifle, in front of the trigger and just before the fore stock (and here is where I am a bit confused), is the serial number. It looks like "11XXXX," but the two side-by-side "1"s have their bottom right almost like they are cut off, making the numbers look like a cross between a "1" and a block "J."marlin 883 date manufacture. Most people will tell us there were no checkering options after WWI, but I've seen enough Model 39's that were checkered in what appeared to be factory checkering to debunk that theory. I believe your rifle is factory checkered.
