Easy as pie. For me, Apple Icon on the left top corner -> About This Mac -> Storage. Shows System Data at 223 GB. I've tried quite a lot of things to reduce the storage on my HD. Gained some disk space but latterly it grows large again. Cleaned up my Download folder of old *.dmg, *.pkg, *.zip and other larger files.

The system couldn't read the size of the directory so I figured it was a problem folder, so I deleted it, emptied the garbage, and restarted. Now my System section is 50 GB (used to be 120 GB).
